The Role of I 20 Application for Studying in an International Visa School

The form I-20 is a significant and multi-used document for international visa school students. It is an approval from the U.S. government to educational institutions certifying that a student has been admitted to a full-time study or language program. This also specifies that the student has sufficient financial resources to stay in the U.S for the tenure of their study. I- 20 Application for International Students is the way to get the Certificate of Eligibility that allows students to apply for an F-1 student visa at the U.S. embassy in any country.

During the admissions process of international students, the international visa schools collect necessary documents regarding financial support, biographic information and identification for requesting the F-1 status. These are required to be entered into the database of U.S. government called SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System). The SEVIS database of the U.S. government processes the information and produces an I-20. The designated school official or DSO prints and signs the I-20 and delivers it to the students who desire to enroll their study in an international school in the USA. Furthermore, if any student requests for updating any information on the I-20, the DSO of the concerned international visa school makes these requests through SEVIS for further process.

One should keep all the copies of I-20 while in the U.S.A. It will help whenever you want a change to your study program or other information. If you are an F-1 student and lose your I-20, please contact your DOS for a replacement immediately. If you are out of U.S., you must get the I-20 replacement before entering the U.S. to continue your studies. When students had completed a study program, they are allowed a 60-day grace period for either departing from the U.S or request a school transfer, or change in visa status.

The completion date of the education based on a student’s degree program is mentioned on I-20 application for International Students. The time mentioned on I-20 applications is an estimated time filled by the international visa school to fulfill necessary requirements. If any students are not able to finish the program on the date mentioned, an extension of the date has to be requested before the completion date expires. As per U.S. immigration regulations, the completion date is defined as the date when all the final degree provisions are accomplished.  In fact, many students actually finish degree requirements before the completion date mentioned on the I-20.

New I-20s are also issued to continuing students. This will happen in special cases whenever there is a significant update to any student’s record. This comprises changes in biographical data, dates for concerned education programs, the addition of a work authorization and much more as mentioned in I-20 Application.
